Joost Willemze (1996) is one of the leading harpists of his generation. His playing is praised for its technical refinement and its strong sense of musical storytelling. His repertoire spans a wide range of styles, from established repertoire to contemporary works. He actively encourages composers to create new music for the harp and seeks to highlight the instrument’s versatility for a broad audience.
Joost is a first-prize winner of the Prinses Christina Concours, the international harp competition in Porto, and Suoni d’Arpa in Italy. He has also been honoured at competitions in Seoul, Munich, Bloomington, and New York. In 2023, he received the prestigious Dutch Classical Talent Award with his program Orpheus, which he performed on a tour across major Dutch concert halls. That same year, he received the Grachtenfestival Prize and was appointed Artist in Residence at the Grachtenfestival 2024.
Joost performs regularly both in the Netherlands and abroad, with appearances ranging from Rio de Janeiro to Taipei. He has played at notable venues including the Royal Palace in Amsterdam and the Italian Ministry of Culture in Rome. As a soloist, he has collaborated with the Netherlands Youth Orchestra, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, with which he recently made his debut in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He is also a frequent guest on radio and television. In 2025 he performed solo at the Prinsengrachtconcert in Amsterdam, live on TV.
Joost studied with Erika Waardenburg at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he earned his master’s degree with distinction. Alongside his musical training, he obtained bachelor’s degrees in Russian and Classical Languages from Leiden University and studied at academic institutes in Rome and Saint Petersburg. This broad intellectual and cultural background provides a significant foundation for his concert programmes.
In addition to his performing career, Joost is active as an educator. He has given masterclasses at conservatories across Europe and Asia and was recently appointed as principal subject teacher of harp at Codarts, the Rotterdam Conservatory.

Zijn repertoire omvat een breed scala aan muziekstijlen, van gevestigd repertoire tot hedendaagse werken. Hij stimuleert componisten om nieuwe werken te schrijven voor de harp. Daarnaast laat hij een breed publiek kennismaken met de veelzijdigheid van het instrument.
Joost won eerste prijzen op het Prinses Christina Concours, het harpconcours in Porto en het Italiaanse Suoni d’Arpa.
